Commissions and Committees

Everyone has gifts to share. At First Presbyterian we believe that God calls each one of us to use those gifts to serve God, to help each other grow, and to care for others and the world. Here are just a few of the ways you can serve First Presbyterian…

Most of the committees or commissions, with the exception of those limited by by-laws, welcome church members and non-members to serve.

You are welcome to volunteer!

Worship & Music

The task of the Worship and Music Commission is to assist the fulfillment of its responsibility for the worship of God by the people of this congregation. The Commission may be found fixing the dates of Holy Communion, making arrangements for the summer service aboard the Valley Gem, pondering acquisition of a new hymnal, recruiting worship leaders, selecting Advent devotional booklets – all in awareness of the centrality of worship in the Christian life. The model for our church today is supplied by the Church at its birth. On Pentecost (Acts 2:41, 42) the new believers “were baptized” and “devoted themselves to the apostolic teaching and fellowship, to the breaking bread and the prayers . . .” We are not to exist in solitary, certainly not self-centered relationship with Christ. We join in the fellowship of believers to be brought to the sacraments, to attend to the Word preached, and to offer prayers of repentance, praise, thanks, and petition. The humbling mission of the Worship and Music Commission is direction to the essential and perhaps ultimate action of the Church; worship of God: Father, Son and Spirit

Christian Education

The Christian Education Commission presents a number of ways to serve. The Christian Education Commission serves to nurture spiritual development and a growing faith through creative educational opportunities, personal and relational experiences, and communal expression of Christian ethics.

Outreach

The Outreach Commission seeks to persuade all peoples of the truth and claims of Christ to be the Son of God, worthy of worship, obedience and service. In addition to the work of the Outreach Commission inside the walls of the church the commission seeks to educate, advocate and promote the extension of God’s love and grace, and our faith outside of Marietta First Presbyterian with an emphasis on hunger and homeless ministries, community efforts, and global offerings.

Building and Administration

Our facility is a big one that requires plenty of loving care. Our Building and Administration commission has practical and planning opportunities for service. Skilled craftsman are always welcome to join in small projects. Over the years the commission membership has also included those with experience in architecture, construction, and project planning.  The Building and Administration Commission serves to care for the physical properties of the congregation through its own efforts, through efforts of church volunteers, and through the oversight of the church staff.

Deacons

Our Deacons exist as a multi-faceted group devoted to outreach and the structure of the church. From assisting with communion to correspondence with our College students, our deacons service is far reaching and crucial to the life of the functioning and worshipful church.
